Why Precious Cargo?
A young couple from a small North Carolina town actively responded to the all-too-often stories in the media
today about parents accidentally leaving children in hot cars. Death can occur in a matter of minutes in a hot
car. July 31 is National Heatstroke Prevention Day, according to the Office of Emergency Medical Services at
Shaun and Kimberly Johnston created the Precious Cargo app for smart phones. Realizing that it’s all too easy
to get distracted, the app simply reminds you of the “precious cargo” that you have riding with you before you
leave your car. “I’m a full-time working father to a one year old daughter,” says Shaun Johnston of Precious
Cargo. “It’s easy to get distracted when you have a lot on your mind, a lot on your to-do list, or a change in a
typical day’s schedule.” The Johnstons, along with childhood friend and business partner Casey Leftwich, first
and foremost want to make sure that kids’ lives are saved with the Precious Cargo app.
The app is simple – when you get into the car and Bluetooth is activated, Precious Cargo sends a message
asking “Will you be traveling with Precious Cargo?” If the answer is “yes,” then the child’s name is added. If
the answer is no, the app is deactivated until the car turns on again. With a “yes” answer, the app again sends
the user a message that is a reminder of the “precious cargo” in the backseat when the car turns off. If your car
is not equipped with Bluetooth technology, the app can provide GPS location finders and timed reminders to
make saving lives as easy as possible.
“We have been really affected by the tragic stories in the media,” says Kimberly Johnston of Precious Cargo.
“You think that you’d never be the one to do such a thing, but we see everyone from the average Joe from a
small town who gets distracted and forgets to drop his child off at daycare to the CEO of a large national
corporation who runs quickly into a grocery store on the way home and forgets the sleeping baby in the
backseat since she is usually with her mother.” Studies have shown that it takes only minutes to raise the
temperature in a car by 10 or 20 degrees in the hot summer, enough to take the life of a young child or a pet in
